What an amazing day yesterday was! I woke up in San Francisco, and went to sleep on the other side of the world! After a painfully long plane trup, we landed at Narita Airport around 4:30 pm. By the time we got our bags, cleared customs, and caught our bus to the hotel, it was nearly 8:00. But what a hotel! It's huge, three buildings and a 10-acre garden.
As soon as we got here, we had do drop our bags in our rooms and meet some college student volunteers to take us out to dinner. My guide's name was Naoko. She was so nice; we really hit it off. We went to dinner at a small noodle shop by the hotel. This is how we ordered: There was a window with plastic models of the food choices and each was numbered. Then there was a vending machine where we put in our Yen and punched the number we wanted. Then we went inside the resturant and they brought us our food. It was delicious! Then Naoko and I were having so much fun that we walked down the street some more. We saw all kinds of shops and she was surprised when I could name so many of the manga and anime characters in a book shop. She didn't know how popular they were here!
We even found an Irish oub that was showing a German soccer game! Yay!! We sat and watched for a few minutes and talked about schools in the US and in Japan. Naoko went to college in Boston for a year and worked in a preschool while she was there.
Eventually, I had to say goodbye and get some sleep. I exchanged email addresses with her, though, so I hope we can keep in touch!
This is a picture of the loading board, telling us we were going to Japan, and the view from my hotel room at dawn.
